About Us

Gert Sibande Chess was established in January 2012 in terms of the mandate by SASCOC/CHESSA originating from a resolution of the National Sports & Recreation Plan of November 2011. One of the resolutions adopted, required that all sporting codes align to the geo-political boundaries of South Africa.

The previous Mpumalanga Highveld Chess Union dissoluted and Gert Sibande Chess together with Nkangala Chess were established. Gert Sibande Chess is an affiliate of Mpumalanga Chess and CHESSA.

The area in which Gert Sibande Chess operates is the Gert Sibande District Municipality comprising of seven local municipalities i.e.

Chess in schools and partnerships with clubs, corporate investment, Department of Basic Education, Department of Sport Culture & Recreation and Local, Regional & Provincial Government are important strategic elements to establish and sustain chess in the region.

Together with the support for club development and the drive for chess as mass participative recreational activity, Gert Sibande Chess wants to make chess to be accessible to the wider community of Gert Sibande Region.
